Noise from building sites

During the process of building, it is common for substantial noise to emanate from the building site. Personnel should be informed about the need to reduce noise and the hazards of extreme noise.

The Australian Standard AS2436-2010 Guide to noise control in construction, maintenance and demolition sites applies to the operations associated with construction, and is intended to assist local authorities, developers, architects, engineers, planners, designers and contractors to control noise on and from construction, maintenance and demolition sites.

The standard provides guidance in noise control in respect of engineering construction, maintenance and demolition works, including guidance in investigation and identification of noise sources, measurement of sound, and its assessment, with a view to planning of measures of noise control.

State environmental legislation may also be of relevance and should be taken into consideration. Local authorities often have by-laws or restrictions on activity, which may be conditions of obtaining building permits or approvals. Specifications should clearly state that the contractor must comply with relevant by-laws and standards.

Architects should be aware that despite compliance with legislative provisions, there is potential for further restrictions being imposed on noisy sites or activities.
