Access guides for fit out

Read time: 1 minute

The access provisions of Premises Standards 2010 have been incorporated into NCC Volume 1 BCA, effective from 1 May 2011.

In all public buildings, access is required to and within all areas normally used by the occupants. Fit-out criteria for these spaces is not included in the Building Code of Australia (BCA). Uninformed design of fit-out can render a space inaccessible, despite its compliance with the BCA access provisions. Inaccessible spaces are vulnerable to DDA complaint.

There are currently no up-to-date Australian Standards on fit-out. AS 1428.2-1992 provides only limited information on fit-out. This Standard is being revised to cover fit-out requirements only.

The Acumen design guide notes on fit-out have been prepared to fill this need, represent best practice, and for incorporation into the revised AS 1428.2.

The Design Guides have been prepared by the Australian Institute of Architects' National Access Work Group comprising members working in the field of disability access, who also represent the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, Australian Property Institute, Association of Consultants in Access Australia, and Standards Australia ME64 Committee.
