Architecture’s role in the repair of the natural environment

Street interface, Prince Alfred Park and Pool by Neeson Murcutt Architects with Sue Barnsley Design Landscape Architecture (Image: Brett Boardman)Through the theme Repair, diverse approaches to the repair of environmental, social and cultural issues were presented at the Australian Pavilion for the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. This paper discusses three of the exhibited projects, demonstrating how architecture can engage with the environment across multiple scales to effect repair of the places it is part of. Through these projects a shift of design focus in primary decision making is proposed to include the relationship to ecosystems across both small and large scales.
