The National Construction Code (NCC) is written and maintained by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) on behalf of the Australian State and Territory Governments, and was established under an Inter-Government Agreement in 1994. The NCC is a performance-based code for building and plumbing, comprising:
- NCC Volume One – Building Code of Australia for Class 2 to 9 buildings
- NCC Volume Two – Building Code of Australia for Class 1 and Class 10 buildings
- NCC Volume Three – Plumbing Code of Australia
The NCC is freely available online by registering at the ABCB website. It is also available for purchase in print copy or electronic formats from commercial providers.
The NCC is amended every three years. It changed from a yearly amendment cycle to a three-yearly amendment cycle in 2016. The next edition of the NCC will be published for adoption in 2019. This aims to reduce red tape and provide industry with higher levels of certainty about the regulation. Less frequent changes means the industry has a better chance of being abreast of the current requirements in the code.
