Procedures for the selection of specialist consultant services in support of architectural services may require the client to provide briefing documents before calling for proposals.

Some consultant-selection processes are wasteful of the time and resources of both the potential consultants and the client. AS 4121—1994 Code of ethics and procedures for the selection of consultants consolidates a number of practices that epitomise common sense. The code should be used when guiding the selection of architects and architects should use the same code for the selection of subconsultants A consultant whose work is subject to the direction and coordination of the primary consultant.
