Familiarise yourself with material selections and construction methods that are incorporated in the design. Provide particular consideration to the selection of materials, their availability, compliance to any legislative requirements specific to the classification of the building and adherence to the National Construction Code (NCC) and/ or Australian Standards of a specified material. Architects carry significant legal liability when selecting and specifying materials and products for the construction of a project, particularly when providing full services in project delivery. During construction, the contractor may propose substituting materials and products specified in the contract documents. Caution must be taken when reviewing and accepting substitute products as this activity represents a significant risk to architects. Refer to related note: Substitutions
Seek professional advice if you are unsure of material and product specificity. Refer also Environment note Materials.
